A solar panel is made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells which convert sunlight into electricity. These cells are made from metal containing very pure silicon, the same element found in sand or quartz.

When solar radiation or sunlight hits a solar panel, electrons in the solar cell are knocked loose from the silicon and begin to flow in a path (electricity). This electricity, flowing in one direction, is “direct current” (DC) and can be used to power things like car headlights or flashlights. To run any appliances with a plug, DC power must be converted to “alternating current” (AC) using an inverter. The inverter’s output of AC can then power your circuit breaker box and the outlets in your home.

However you can also send that output of AC back to the utility grid to earn money.
